Spatial Workshop Presentation [PDF]

This workshop will focus on uncovering patterns and generating actionable insights from large datasets using spatial . We will explore combining open government data with other location based information sources like Twitter. Participants will be guided through examples that use Hadoop and Amazon EC2 for scalable processing of location data. We will also cover some basics on spatial statistics, correlations, and trends along with how to visualize and communicate your results with open source tools.

Pete Skomoroch is a Research Scientist at LinkedIn, focusing on building data driven products. For the past several years, he has been a consultant at Data Wrangling in Washington, DC, working on projects involving search, finance, and recommendation systems. Before joining LinkedIn, he was the Director of Advanced at Juice and a Sr. Research Engineer at AOL Search. He spent the previous 6 years in Boston implementing pattern detection algorithms for streaming sensor data at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and constructing predictive models for large retail datasets at Profitlogic. Pete has a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Brandeis University.

Kevin Weil leads the team at Twitter, building distributed infrastructure and leveraging data analysis at a massive scale to help grow the popular micro-blogging service. With millions of monthly site visitors and many more interacting through API-based third party applications, Twitter has one of the world’s most varied and interesting datasets. Prior to joining Twitter, Kevin led the team at the Kleiner Perkins-backed web media startup Cooliris. Kevin earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics from Harvard University, and has a master’s degree in Physics from Stanford University.

Sean Gorman

Sean Gorman founded FortiusOne in 2005 to bring advanced geospatial technologies to market. With over 10 years of experience at the forefront of the geospatial revolution as a researcher, practitioner, and entrepreneur at FortiusOne, Sean recognizes both the opportunities and challenges presented by the changing Web. Sean brings insight and innovation to the next generation of the Web and seeks to enable users of both GIS and the GeoWeb with solutions that marry the best of both worlds to create actionable intelligence and grow collective knowledge.

Prior to FortiusOne, Sean served as VP of R&D for GeoTel, a telecommunications mapping company, and Director of Strategy for iXOL, a Washington D.C. based incubator. Sean received his PhD from George Mason University as the Provost’s High Potential Research Candidate and Fisher Prize recipient.
