As the moon and planets went from being objects of wonder in the sky to actual destinations, space scientists have been forced to devise increasingly complex mapping systems for the heavens. In this fun talk history of science and technology junkie Chris Spurgeon returns to Where 2.0 to explain we decided name the craters on the Moon, how we figured out where to put the Prime Meridian on Venus, and how astronauts on the International Space Station answer the question “Which way is up, anyway?”
By day, Chris Spurgeon is a web developer for The Walt Disney Company, where he helps feed and water one of the most popular websites in the world, disney.com. By night Chris mucks about with obsolete technologies, investigates odd corners of the history of science and invention, builds rockets, and maintains the blog Spurgeonworld focusing on places where science and art meet.
