Developing a Location-Based Mobile Social Game in 5 Weeks: Lean Game Development Lessons Learned

During October 2010, four strangers came together to take an idea from concept to prototype. Starting out with an idea for a mobile tour guide (GPS based audio), we applied the ‘lean startup’ methodology to rapidly prove out hypotheses through customer development and execution.

This session will discuss the methods we used, and learning specific to mobile and game development:

How to understand what your key assumptions are, question everything and ask the right questions to potential users; how to prototype mobile game mechanics using alternative platforms to deal with sparseness; how to create engagement and interactivity before you start coding; how to get great feedback; when to run with an idea and when to let go.

Attendees interested in prototyping mobile games and building next generation interactive apps would benefit from this talk.

Jennie Lees


Jennie is a product manager at Google in Mountain View. She was previously the founder of a web 2.0 startup in the UK which focused on getting quantitative intelligence from free-form text published on social media—collective intelligence meets natural language processing.

Jennie holds two Computer Science degrees from the University of Cambridge and left a promising Ph.D. there to pursue her startup ambitions. She first got sucked into the new media world while working as a blogger for AOL Weblogs Inc and has since spoken at various events in the UK including TechCrunch’s Realtime Christmas Crunch.

Jennie gets excited by data, information overload, making meaning from chaos and social games.

This talk is about work done by Jennie outside of her role at Google.
