Searching for places nearby and discovering interesting new places are important aspects of the Facebook Places product. In this talk, we will describe our system for querying and ranking nearby places in search results. Our system combines user-generated places with places from other sources to provide high-quality results. We will also describe the system that provides personalized place recommendations.
Srinivas Narayanan is an engineering manager on the Facebook Product Engineering team where he focuses on Facebook Places. He helped launch a number of different products at Facebook including Places, Profile Connections and Community Pages, Usernames, and several new versions of Pages. Prior to Facebook, he worked on database systems research at IBM Almaden Research Center and on enterprise software at Tavant Technologies. He has a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India.
