Presentation: Real-Time Geo Presentation [PDF]

A lot of engineers and product developers wonder how to “place enable” their applications or concepts. Part of that is an engineering challenge, and part of that is a UI and user expectation challenge. This workshop will attempt to answer those questions. Specifically, this talk is based around concepts that Twitter has used to create an architecture specifically targeted to be able to handle “real-time geo”. At Twitter, we’ve built a system that enables the Twitter ecosystem to be location-enabled, allows our architecture to make inferences about places, and enables people to find out about the world. How can you use the same concepts that Twitter has used to build your own app?

@raffi is the lead at Twitter’s Platform Services team, the custodians of Twitter’s core logic. Previously, he managed the Platform’s API as well as being the one of those behind Twitter’s Geospatial APIs. Before Twitter he used to create technologies to help people frame their personal energy consumption against global energy production, and also ran a consulting company building off-the-wall projects. At one point, he used to teach at NYU’s ITP and spent way too much time as a student at MIT and the MIT Media Lab.
