Gaming has moved quickly from off the couch to entirely new settings in recent years. Consumers are no longer are confined to where they can play and have a whole new world of possibilities when they can use real-world surroundings in a video game. The Parrot AR.Drone, a quadricopter piloted with an iPhone or iPod touch, allows consumers to fly in a real-world environment while simultaneously playing a video game from the device’s screen. The Parrot AR.Drone combines the best of today’s wireless, video and gaming technologies to allow objects and conditions, like a tree or wind, to become a part of the video gaming experience.
The AR.Drone platform provides developers with a vast amount of possibilities to create a new generation of games that better utilize locations and conditions as part of the gaming experience. Martin Lefebure, one of the lead engineers on Parrot’s development of the AR.Drone, will provide an overview of the development of the product, the technology and the possibilities for developers in this space.
Martin Lefebure holds a doctorate in applied mathematics from Paris University. He started as chief scientist for Poseidon (now MGI), the first drowning video detection system for public pools, which has been installed on more than 150 sites and directly saved 12 lives. He also launched Realeyes3D, a camera-phone document scanning and motion sensing technology company that is enabled on more than 30 million phones. He joined Parrot in 2007 to manage the AR..Drone project.
