Tips for hiring a lawer for a DUI

Tip 1: Always make sure your Colorado DUI attorney is knowledgable about the current laws.

The law changes everyday, and espcially in the case of DUI case law.  Which is why it is essential for an attorney to know about every change in the law.  So make sure your attorney makes it a point to go to seminars and other ways to keep up to date on all the current laws in your state.  Laws do vary from state to state, so if your lawyer practices in multiple states, be sure that they are up to date for each area of practice.

Tip 2: It is important that your attorney has trial experience.

You want to make sure your Denver DUI attorney has experience taking cases to trial.  You do not want an attorney who does not know what the inside of a courtroom looks like.  Those lawyers often plead cases out and do not always get the best results for their clients.  You will also have to consider their court record.  How many wins, losses and plea bargins have they been responsible.  This will be a good indication of what they can do for your case.

Tip 3- Always discuss fees before you sign on the dotted line.

Make sure to have an honest discussuion about fees beforehand.  You will want to make sure you and your lawyer agree on the terms, and that you know what to expect when it comes to billing.  Make sure to ask the following questions:

Do they offer a flat fee?

Do they bill based on an hourly rate?

If so, how many hours do they anticipate charging for?

Are there additional cost not added into the basic fee? If so, what are they?

That being said, never choose an attorney based on price alone.  Experience is worth more than any dollar amount when it comes to defending you in a criminal court of law.
